Persistent Identifiers (PIDs) play a crucial role in supporting both open science and the implementation of FAIR data principles by ensuring the long-term accessibility, findability, and proper citation of scientific resources.
PIDfest Global Community
The first ever PIDfest conference was organized by Czech Republic National Library of Technology (NTK) and Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC). PIDfest took place from Tuesday 11 to Thursday 13 June 2024 in beautiful Prague, Czech Republic.
PIDfest brought together the global community behind the infrastructure that makes our research findable. This global community includes the Research Data Alliance (RDA), PID Providers like DOI, ORCID, ROR, RAiD and PID registration agencies such as CrossRef, DataCite, and the Africa PID Alliance. A special highlight was the Handle System, a system assigning, managing, and resolving persistent identifiers for the DOI system, ensuring that digital objects are accessible over the long term—the very foundation of the DOI system.
The challenges of PIDs global adoption
The challenges of PID global adoption, was addressed by Joy Owango, the executive director of Training Centre in Communication (TCC), the first African-based training centre supporting African researchers disseminate their research. Africa PID Alliance is part of the Open Infrastructure Program of the TCC, an initiative aiming to bring equitable access and sovereignty over research data to African researchers by producing Persistent, Accessible Affordable PIDs in Africa.
We are delighted to say that the first #PIDfest conference was a great success. Thank you to everyone who organised and participated to make this event memorable.
Next PID global community meeting
We look forward to seeing the PID global community in Australia at the 2025 International Data Week 13-16 of October.
