foundingGIDE aims to establish a Global Image Data Ecosystem and enhance image data interoperability by developing standardised recommendations for ontologies and metadata in collaboration with the global bioimage data community.

The ELMI meeting, attended by more than 600 researchers and service providers across Europe and the world, was a great place to engage with light microscopy experts. The foundingGIDE project was presented to this expert audience as part of a talk during the core facilities day, as well as a poster during the conference. 

To engage with the light microscopy community Aastha Mathur (Euro-BioImaging), Matthew Hartley (BioImage Archive at EMBL-EBI), and Shuichi Onami (SSBD at RIKEN) hosted the “Global BioImaging: Accelerating Collaboration and Innovation through Data Dialogue” Community Room. 

This event took the form of a one-hour workshop on raising awareness and building global collaboration around image data and metadata. Aastha Mathur kicked off the workshop with an introduction to Global BioImaging (GBI) and its working groups, while Matthew Hartley, presented the foundingGIDE project and underlined the motivation and need for global coordination of efforts, technical developments and ontologies.

There are many opportunities to engage with both GBI and foundingGIDE, such as through the Global BioImaging Image Data Management WG and the two back-to-back events happening in Japan (hybrid) later this year: Global BioImaging Exchange of Experience IX October 29-31, and foundingGIDE Community Event October 31-November 1.
